When Johnson Kam and Eddie Flores Jr. brought L&L to the mainland of the United States, they understood that most Californians had never heard of the plate lunch. As a result, it was renamed L&L Hawaiian Barbecue®. Plate lunch, commonly known as “Hawaii’s state dish,” traces back to 19th century sugar plantation and pineapple field workers who took rice and other leftovers to work in segmented tins. Lunches were frequently shared, resulting in a delectable blend of home dishes from Japan, China, the Philippines, Portugal, Korea, and even New England.
