The History of the Pizza King
In 1956, in the heart of Lafayette, Indiana, Pizza King Inc. was founded. Wendell Swartz, the owner, came up with the concept of opening a pizza shop in Lafayette. The right components for Pizza King’s “secret recipe” were produced by Wendell’s vision and enthusiasm for culinary knowledge. In Naples, Italy, in the 18th or early 19th century, similar flatbread meals evolved into modern pizza. Pizza was first recorded in Gaeta in A.D. 997, and then in other areas of Central and Southern Italy after that. Pizza was popular in Italy and among Italian expats.
Legend has it that Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889. There, Esposito was asked to make them a pizza. He topped the pizza with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil. That pizza is still known as Pizza Margherita today.
