Jacques French Cafe Menu
In 1918, my Grandmother, a lovely Frenchwoman known to everybody as Maman, went to Paris. My Grandfather, H’mimi, but known as Mimi, established his first French restaurant in 1914 at the same time. In the early 1900s, he boarded a ship to Marseille, France, and arrived in the centre of Paris. Maman began working for Mimi at the early age of 14 years old, on the eve of the First World War in 1918. Maman and Mimi’s professional connection became stronger over time, and they eventually fell in love. They decided it was time to tie the knot and relocated to Algeria. They took the decision to close their beloved Bistro and embark on a new chapter in their lives.
Maman and Mini started their family in the Algerian town of Tazmalt, in the Kabylie area. They raised a family of 14 children, all of whom adored family dinners since Maman’s cuisine was unrivalled. She’d prepare enormous pans of food to serve everyone. My Grandfather passed away, but our family wanted his legacy to continue on, so they named me after him when I was born!
