Helmand Menu

It all started with a love storey in 1970, when 22-year-old Qayum Karzai was living in a building near DuPont Circle in Washington, D.C. Patricia Morgan, his landlord’s daughter, became a friend and assisted him in learning English. Qayum was so smitten with 19-year-old Pat that he paid his rent in ones—all $81 of it—just to spend more time with her. They appeared to be from different worlds. He was from Afghanistan, where his father had a significant position in parliament. She was from Pittsburgh, and he was from Afghanistan. He took her to a Lebanese restaurant on their first date, where she ordered the fried chicken. With a fond grin, Qayum continues, “I mention it whenever I can.” “He never let me forget it,” says the narrator.
